OVERVIEW
Lead Instructor and retired US Army Staff Sgt, Sam Cila, discusses his experiences being wounded in a bloody ambush in Iraq in 2005, his rescue by heroic teammates, and his challenging journey to recovery including over 40 major surgeries, the amputation of his left hand, competing in ultra-endurance events, and finally, summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Sam discusses battlefield trauma, fear, the acceptance of challenges, and the vital importance of teammate support and accountability when adversity strikes.
We will schedule a pre-event call with Sam and you to better understand the makeup of your group and to discuss any team-specific messaging that he can include in his speech.
The speech begins with a short video segment introduced by the moderator.
Sam will then show photos from his various adventures throughout the remainder of the presentation.
Sam’s speech is 50 minutes in duration followed by a Q&A segment.
Sam Cila serves as The Program’s Operations Chief. He is a Retired Staff Sergeant in the US Army. He served with the “Fighting 69th” Infantry Regiment out of New York City and the First Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood Texas and also worked in Army Special Operations.
Sam served combat tours in Iraq from 2004-2005 and was decorated with awards for valor in combat as well as a Purple Heart. His life took a drastic turn when he was injured on July 4th, 2005. Dedication to the team and selfless service have helped Sam attack many challenges.
He is an elite-level endurance athlete, a 2x member of the USA Para National triathlon team, an Ironman World championship finisher, and a high-altitude mountaineer. Sam also serves as spokesperson for Operation Rebound and Canine Companions for Independence, two organizations that support injured veterans.
